Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

About LAX Airport
The bright lights and sleek, modern design of Los Angeles International Airport will make any passenger feel like they have flown into a movie set. Providing services to over 60 million each year, LAX is considered the gateway to Hollywood. Busy at all hours of the day, its lively runways keeps the airport the sixth busiest worldwide, and the busiest within the state of California. There are more ‘origin and destination’ passengers traveling through LAX than any other airport in the world.

Location
LAX – pronounced by its individual letters, is located 16 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles within the Westchester neighborhood. The location of the airport is often a popular destination because of the nearby availability of both sea and land transport. However, due to its closeness to the Pacific Ocean, low lying clouds or fog conditions may divert flights to supplemental airports in the area.

Los Angeles International is also a base for the US Coast Guard, serving as a joint-military facility. For those wanting to catch a glimpse of some of these awe-inspiring aircrafts, observation areas such as Imperial Hill are popular for airplane enthusiasts.

History
The site for LAX was selected in 1928 after there was a great need for a municipal airport. Two short years later, it opened its gates for service under the original name of Mines Field. Many improvements and expansions incurred between then and 1949, when the name was changed officially to Los Angeles International Airport.
