Indianapolis International Airport (IND)

About IND Airport
Indianapolis International Airport’s complex is one of the latest to open in the U.S. since 2001. With a ribbon-cutting ceremony in 2008, the new airport has seen almost 8 million passengers in its first year. The airport boasts on having average fares that are much lower than the surrounding airports of Dayton, Louisville, and Columbus. IND is also home to the world’s second largest FedEx Express operation.

Location
Indianapolis International is approximately 16 minutes from downtown Indy, conveniently located off I-70 and located minutes from a handful of U.S. interstates such as I-65, I-69, and I-74. Passengers arriving and departing have a variety of options for both parking and ground transportation. A complimentary Cell Phone lot is available for those waiting for passengers to arrive at IND.

History
Plans for a new airport complex started in the late 1970’s; over the next three decades, the “Midfield Project” was changed, modified, reviewed and updated to ensure the final outcome would be a state-of-the-art, new and modern facility to serve the city of Indianapolis and the state for years to come.

The Colonel H. Weir Cook Terminal is a state-of-the-art facility opened in November of 2008, a few years after a new Control Tower and TRACON building were constructed. The $1.1 billion development was the largest in Indianapolis’ history.

The new terminal is home to 44 domestic gates and 2 international. To allow for future expansion, not all gate positions were used upon the facility’s opening. International passengers arriving into IND can now be processed at customs in the main passenger building; this was not the case in previous years.

Services
IND serves a handful of cities with nonstop flights on a daily basis; there are 11 daily nonstop flights to Atlanta, five to Dallas and Orlando, and four to Phoenix, just to name a few. For passengers, these flights are often below the average for fares of other airports.

A wide range of services and amenities can be found at Indianapolis International. For passengers’ convenience, Guest Services is their one-stop information and assistance hub, with services including brochures, passenger paging, directions, and business needs.

A mix of unique and convenient shops are available for travelers who have forgotten their toothbrush or are looking to pick up a souvenir. In addition, a variety of dining options are located on site such as Vinea, McDonald’s and Cold Stone Creamery.
