The Fort Lauderdale airport, also known as FLL, is the gateway to the city’s world-famous sandy beaches. Over 21 million passengers per year pass through FLL’s facility, making it one of the 50th busiest airports in the world, and one of the fastest growing.

Location
FLL is conveniently situated in the heart of Broward County, minutes from downtown Fort Lauderdale and a quick drive north of Miami. The city of Hollywood is also very close to the airport. It is easily accessible from many of the major roadways, including I-95, I-75, U.S. 1 and Florida’s Turnpike. In addition, the Tri-Rail commuter system links Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade’s counties.

Cruise passengers will enjoy the close proximity of FLL to the cruise line terminals located at Port Everglades; the airport is widely popular among tourists bound for the Caribbean, and no other airport can get you from air to ship faster.

History
FLL originally opened in 1929 on an abandoned 9-hole golf course and was first named Merle Fogg Airport. With the onset of World War II, it was renamed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale and was commissioned by the US Navy. Broward County took over in 1946 and the name changed once more to Broward County International Airport.

The airport’s first terminal building and current name happened in 1959 and continued to grow in operation. Between 1969 and 1994, passenger traffic went from 1 million to 10 million. The 2005 hurricane season affected FLL by both Katrina and Wilma; the airport was shut down for 48 hours for minor damage and again for 5 days during Hurricane Wilma.

Recently, a $695 million expansion transformed FLL’s terminals, garage complex and roadways into a more easily accessible, modern, and user-friendly service. Over the years, FLL has made a point to make significant contributions to both the culture and economy of South Florida.

FLL offers domestic non-stop services to more than 55 cities. International services are popular for passengers going to Canada, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Europe, and Mexico.

On any given day, visitors in FLL will consume over 4,000 cups of coffee and almost 30,000 meals. A nice array of restaurants and shops are available within the terminals and concourses of FLL, with convenient amenities such as ice cream shops, shoeshine, and the Florida Lottery. In addition to shopping and eating, passengers can enjoy live music in FLL through a program called Terminal Tunes. Local entertainers showcase their talent to both residents and visitors passing through the airport in various locations and with various music types.
