Commonly referred to as Detroit Metro or DTW, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is one of the top airports in the world and one of the nation’s most modernized. J.D. Power & Associates recently gave Detroit Metro bragging rights by naming it the best large US airport for customer satisfaction. It is also home to the world’s second-longest airport terminal building, measuring in at an impressive one mile.

Location
DTW serves passengers of Detroit’s greater metropolitan area, in addition to Toledo and Windsor, Ontario in nearby Canada. Located in Romulus, Michigan, it is approximately 20 miles from downtown Detroit and easily accessible by all locations via interstate 94 and 275.

History
What was originally called the Wayne County Airport, DTW first opened to the public in 1929. Expansion ensued between 1947 and 1950 and Wayne County Airport became the area’s primary airport, and upgraded its name to Detroit-Wayne Major Airport. Additional runways were built, and its size went up threefold.

The late 1950s were of considerable importance for DTW; $1 million was to be given to the airport under the Federal Aid-to-Airports program, and a 30 year contract was established between American Airlines and Detroit-Wayne Major Airport. Construction then began a year later to expand the airport and include a hotel, new terminal building, restaurant and runway. The name was eventually expanded as well. Throughout the next few decades, more drastic and important improvements and expansions have been underway, and are in the works to continue doing so.

Approximately 160 non-stop destinations are available for travel to and from DTW, making the airport a successful and popular gateway to places such as Asia and Europe, in addition to domestic travel. The low-cost carrier, Spirit Air, has a major hub based out of Detroit Metro.

Public Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the airport in addition to many other services and amenities. Massage chairs, shoeshine, money exchange, and a business center are only a few examples of the numerous available. Fine dining, casual dining and fast food are dotted throughout the terminals for hungry passengers. A Smoking Lounge near the B Gates offers the only place you can go to smoke before or after a flight, and there are also the duty free and souvenir stores.
