About DEN Airport With a roof suggestive of the
snow-capped Rocky Mountains, Denver International Airport blends
in effortlessly to the Colorado backdrop and has gained global
acclaim for its signature roofline. One of the most scenic
airports in the United States, passengers can view high plains
to the east, and mountains to the west while crossing over its
famous pedestrian bridge. Often known as DIA, Denver
International Airport accommodates over 50 million passengers
each year with 30 passenger airlines and 93 gates, all situated
under a distinctive fiberglass roof.
Location
DIA is 25 miles from downtown Denver, a distance chosen to
reduce noise pollution in developing areas, allow for longer
runways, and for future expansion. The amount of Colorado
terrain DIA occupies is twice the size of Manhattan, making it
the largest international airport in the United States by land
size.
History
In the last 25 years, DIA is the only airport that has been built in the
US, making it the newest airport to date. Constant design changes and
poor planning caused repeated setbacks for the completion of the
airport, but was finally open by early 1995. There have been two major
closings to DIA since the opening, both due to Colorado’s rough winter
weather that often sneaks up on the Rockies. Despite the unpredictable
weather, DIA has often been known to having some of the most on-time
arrivals.
Close to 10,000 solar panels are used to
generate energy at DIA, reducing their carbon emission by more than five
million pounds per year and generating half the energy needed to power
their underground transit system. |

The growing collection and display of art
that has been integrated into the design of DIA is almost unmatchable.

artistic creations and collections, establishing itself as one of the
