Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL)

About DAL Airport
Own and operated by the city of Dallas, Dallas Love Field serves over seven million passengers on an annual basis. It was once ranked the top airport in its category for accessibility, terminal facilities and security. Love Field was the city’s primary airport until Dallas-Fort Worth International opened in 1974. Today, Love Field serves as a vital link to Dallas and its economy; it serves as an important employer and provider for both visitors and residents.

Location
Dallas Love Field is seven miles northwest of downtown Dallas and a 20-minute drive from the Convention Center. It is accessible from US-75, the Dallas North Tollway, and I-35E; the crossroads are Mockingbird Lane and Cedar Springs Road.

History
Opened in 1917, Love Field started off primarily as an Army flying field. Named after the late First Lieutenant Moss Lee Love, it then opened for civilian use a decade later when the City of Dallas purchased the land.

Passenger service began in 1929 with flights from Dallas to Jackson via Delta Air. After the country began to see in increase in passenger air traffic, Dallas Love incurred notable growth and expansion in the 1960s. Concourses and runways were expanded and the airport was prosperous up until the building of Dallas-Fort Worth International. However, with the success of Southwest Airlines and airplane deregulation, Love Field eventually rebounded and again climbed to the top of successful airports.

Most recently, a $519 million Master Plan to modernize the airport was announced to replace and expand the current facility; it is scheduled to be finished in 2014.
