Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport is the largest airport of Ohio, and was the first U.S. municipally owned commercial airport. Over 12 million passengers pass through Cleveland International each year, making it the 35th busiest airport in the country. However, passenger count has been on the decline throughout the past few years; a 12% decrease happened between 2008 and 2009.

Location
CLE is located nine miles southwest from downtown Cleveland; it lies within the city limits of Cleveland in Cuyahoga County. Airport parking is available 24 hours a day and is patrolled by security at all hours. Full service valet is available curbside, and can even assist passengers with car detailing, courier service, dry cleaning and floral services. Call ahead and you can have your vehicle waiting upon your return.

History
Established in 1925, the Cleveland Airport System opened Cleveland Municipal Airport, the first municipally-owned in the country. In 1951, the name was changed to Cleveland Hopkins Airport after its founder, William R. Hopkins. After international operation began to Canada in 1946, ‘International’ was added to its title to reflect the change. A new terminal was built in 1956, now known as Concourse B, and included the nation’s first electric flight-information board. CLE unveiled their new marketing campaign in 2006, with the phrase “CLE Going Places” in an effort to improve passengers’ experiences with upgrades and improvements to their restaurant and retail concessions, on-site parking, and additional flight destinations.

More than 260 nonstop flights are available out of CLE each day, reaching to over 80 destinations, including service to Mexico, England and Canada. Ten air carriers provide passengers numerous flight options, including Continental Airlines, which has a hub at CLE.

Passengers needing to reach Canada can fly into Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City, while those looking to head further south can get to Cancun and Punta Cana on airlines out of Cleveland. Those looking to leave North America can fly into London, Shanghai, Paris and Belgrade on intercontinental flights available on a handful of airlines.
