Chicago’s Airport System is home to two major airports, Midway and O’Hare. O’Hare is considered the city’s primary airport despite it being the furthest from its main business district. For the time-conscious travelers: beware. O’Hare may be notorious for its bright, neon walkway, but the unfortunate downfall is the constant flight delays and cancellations (over a sixth of the nation’s total flight cancellations happen out of O’Hare). This is often a headache for the business travelers who account for the majority of passengers. Surprising for some, O’Hare has been voted the “Best Airport in the World” for the past ten years by Business Traveler Magazine as well as Global Travel Magazine. O'Hare is also know as Ohare Field.

Location
Chicago OHare is often a very scenic arrival for passengers; views of Navy Pier and Lake Michigan can be seen from above and provide a true Midwest welcome. Residents of Chicago know taking the train into the airport is often the most convenient way to O’Hare and can save a pretty penny on parking. The airport is in the northwest corner of the city and is located within the counties of both Cook and DuPage. If you are doing a simple drop off or passenger pick up, free parking is available for stopovers of ten minutes or less.

History
The primary purpose for the initial construction of O’Hare was for a manufacturing plant during World War II to build Douglas-C 54s. The airport was originally called Orchard Place Airport/ Douglas Field before the development of O’Hare was put into action due to Midway Airport becoming too crowded.

Four terminals with 182 gates are currently serving both domestic and international flights; additional terminals may be in the works for future construction, although neighboring communities have been in constant resistance towards any expansion. United Airline’s primary and largest hub is based out of ORD and is part of the reason O’Hare is the fourth busiest airport in the world.

Services
It’s impossible to miss the complete Brachiosaurus skeleton if you are walking through Terminal 1; not many airports can boast having a complete dinosaur skeleton on display. Nor can you find a complete life-size fighter plane hanging from the ceiling like you can at O’Hare.

Aside from the unique spectacles it has to offer, the airport is also home to a medical center, interfaith chapel, and numerous places to spend your money. Duty free shops, Chicago souvenir stores, and plenty of places to eat and drink are spotted throughout the airport. If you happen to be one of the unlucky passengers stuck with the infamous O’Hare delays or cancellations, Wi-Fi is available to assist with passing the time.
