Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)

About CLT Airport
Every day, Charlotte Douglas International Airport connects its passengers to limitless US and international destinations. Serving as the largest hub for US Airways, this airport has been ranked the 11th busiest airport in the nation. It was recently awarded the prestigious Eagle Award for Best Airport, recognizing productivity, environmental records and safety, just to name a few.

Location
CLT is located directly off I-485, which is easily reached via I-77 and I-85. It is only a quick five-minute commute from the financial district of Charlotte, and is conveniently situated by the borders of both North and South Carolina. 91 passenger gates are concentrated into one terminal with five concourses and cover over 1.7 million square feet. Parking options for both passengers and guests have improved throughout the past few years, and two new parking decks offer over 6,000 additional spaces. For other forms of transportation and those who wish to avoid heavy parking fees, ground transportation options may be a good idea.

History
A $200,000 grant established the first municipal airport for the Charlotte area in 1930; six years later, it was open and operated by the city. Major renovations took place in the late 1960s, and the facility was considerably expanded. Passenger numbers doubled in the late 70s due to airline deregulations, and a new runway and control tower were constructed to handle the increased traffic. The airport's original master plan also had a new terminal in the works, and ground broke in 1979. A few years later, the airport was officially named Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Further construction will begin in 2012 to keep CLT on the forefront of aviation, and will welcome a new International Terminal.
